MOS is metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors, or metal-insulator-semiconductors. MOS source and drain can be swapped, they are formed in the P-type back gate N-type area.

The bipolar transistor amplifies the small changes in the input current and outputs a large current change at the output. Another type of transistor called a field effect transistor (FET), which translates the change in input voltage into a change in output current. The gain of the FET is equal to its trans-conductance, defined as the ratio of the change in output current to the change in input voltage.


FETs affect the current flowing through a transistor by projecting an electric field across an insulating layer. In fact, no current flows through this insulator, so the GATE current in FET is very small. The most common FET uses a thin layer of silicon dioxide as an insulator under GATE. This type of transistor is called a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) transistor, or a metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistor (MOSFET). Because MOS are smaller and more power efficient, they have replaced bipolar transistors in many applications.
