How to Properly Apply Schottky Diode and Choose The Type
We often have customers replace other brands with our Lexus (LX)“Schottky diode” or “Fast recovery diodes”, and there are always problems along the way, so we think there should be the following points to note when changing products:
1.The actual operating current of the application circuit should be less than the positive current rating of the Schottky diode, generally not more than 60% of the rated If.
2. The peak operating voltage of the application circuit shall be less than the maximum reverse breakdown voltage of the Schottky diode VRRM, generally not more than 80% of the rated voltage VRRM.
3. The actual operating temperature of the Schottky diode in the application circuit shall be less than the maximum junction temperature Tjmax of the Schottky diode.
4. For more demanding environments, in order to ensure reliability, the Schottky diode should be reduced, especially considering the selection of positive current rating.
5. For large surge voltage or surge current application circuit should be added suppression and absorption circuit.
6. Replace the Schottky diode with the original model, because different models Schottky forward voltage drop VF and reverse breakdown voltage VR, reverse leakage current IR are different. For example, replacing MBR2045 with MBR20100, although the reverse breakdown voltage of MBR20100 is higher than that of MBR2045, does not seem to be a problem. But the forward voltage drop of MBR20100 is higher than that of MBR2045. If it is used in set-top box power circuit, it will cause + 5v and + 12V voltage deviation too much, and the power consumption will be higher than before. All of us in the selection of the preferred need to consider the forward voltage drop VF and reverse breakdown voltage VR, reverse leakage IR and other parameters.
