Nippon Chemi-Con Added Large-Size, High-Capacitance Products to SMD Type Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors MHS Series
Nippon Chemi-Con has expanded its product lineup by adding large-size, high-capacitance products sized φ16mm and φ18mm to SMD Type Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors MHS Series (currently only available in φ12.5mm).
The MHS Series which guarantees 5,000 hours at 125℃ has a maximum 2.4 times higher capacitance than the conventional MVH Series. Reflow heat resistance is also improved and guarantees high-temperature reflow (JEDEC standard) is supported. The Series has been on sale since 2016, targeting communications infrastructure fields such as mobile phone base stations and the car electronics market.
In conventional communication base stations, the baseband unit (digital signal processing) and the RF unit (radio signal transmission) were fixed to a standard rack in individual cases and cooled by a blower fan. However, in the high capacitance/high-speed communication (LTE) method, communication base stations are downsized by storing all functions in one case, and cooling is done only by natural convection in a heat sink without using blower fans. With this method, the internal environment tends to become severe for electronic components. Furthermore, base stations operate 24 hours a day and are difficult to maintain when installed in remote areas, and aluminum electrolytic capacitors are required to secure a high-temperature and long-life performance. In addition, as power supplies will require further output and downsizing, an increase in capacitance and downsizing of capacitors will become necessary as well. High-temperature reflow capability will also be required due to the simultaneous mounting with many surface-mount products.
In car electronics applications, electronic controls are rapidly being adopted in automobiles, and the mounting positions of ECUs (electronic control units) are expanding from inside cabins to outside cabins, and even to engine compartments. Electronic control units (engine ECUs) installed in or near engine compartments are exposed to radiant heat from the engine when the vehicle is in motion, while they are expected to be exposed to extremely low ambient temperatures in cold climates. Therefore, the performance required for capacitors installed in engine ECUs is not only thermal stability at high temperatures but also stable electrical characteristics (ESR characteristics) at low temperatures near -40℃.
The MHS Series was developed in 2016 as a product that meets these needs, and the φ12.5 mm products were commercialized ahead of the other case sizes. However, as demand for large-size and high-capacitance products has increased, Nippon Chemi-Con decided to add φ16 mm and φ18 mm products to the Nippon Chemi-Con lineup. Nippon Chemi-Con expands sales to communication base stations and car electronics markets.
[About the MHS Series]
The MHS Series has achieved high capacitance by increasing the surface area of aluminum electrode foils with the use of thinner separators and using aluminum electrode foils with larger surface areas. When compared to the conventional MVH Series supporting 125℃, the capacitance of products of the same size is up to 2.4 times higher.
Nippon Chemi-Con has achieved a long life of 5,000 hours at 125℃ and met the demand for high-temperature reflow by using high-performance electrolytes while maintaining a certain amount of product porosity. The electrolyte has low vapor pressure and low evaporation at high temperatures. It also has excellent low-temperature characteristics and is less likely to solidify even in a very low-temperature region of -40℃. Therefore, Nippon Chemi-Con has succeeded in suppressing ESR elevation in low-temperature environments.
