Nisshinbo Launched RIOT-002 the Second Generation of the Environment Sensing Board, for Use in IoT Verification Experiments
The RIOT-002 is an environment sensing board that can send sensor data of temperature, humidity, atmospherIC pressure, illuminance, and 3-axis acceleration to tablets and other devices via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE).
Equipped with our power management ICs for energy harvesters, ultra-low current consumption ICs and a real-time clock IC, this board achieves independent power generation and prolongation of battery operating time, all of which IoT edge devices require. It makes it easy to develop new IoT edge devices, contributes to shortening the construction period of those devices, and is applicable to environment data loggers, electronic shelf tags, etc.
Features
1. Charging from Photovoltaic Panel to Secondary Battery
The R1801, a buck DC/DC switching regulator for energy harvesters, is used to extract power from a photovoltaic panel (not included) and charge the secondary battery. The internal maximum power point control (MPPC) function enables the R1801 to configure its MPPC voltage at which the photovoltaic panel you use can produce its maximum power.
2. High-efficiency Operation
Since the MCU, BLE, and sensors are operated by using the RP605, an ultra-low current consumption buck-boost DC/DC switching regulator with the battery monitor, and the RP118, an ultra-low current consumption LDO, both standby and active operation can be performed with high efficiency. The average operating current (at 5-second intervals of BLE transmission) is 22 µA.
3. Dedicated Application
The RIOT-002 series includes our dedicated application for Android. Using the dedicated application enables the RIOT-002 to collect and monitor various environmental data. The application can also be used to set operating hours, the transmission intervals of environment data, etc.
Improvements over RIOT-001
· Expansion of use situations thanks to an on-board 3-axis acceleration sensor
· Available for several types of small batteries (refer to the specifications for details)
· Improvement of our dedicated application for Android (e.g., setting of operating hours, data transmission interval, etc.)
· Optimization of power management ICs
· Energy saving by time management using RTC
