Nippon Chemi-Con Corporation has developed a transparent polymer electrode with its original conductive polymer technology accumulated in developing conductive polymer aluminum solid capacitors. Since these electrodes, in which PEDOT (poly 3, 4-ethylene dioxythiophene) is formed into a transparent film, have high flatness, smoothness, and transparency (visible light transparency of 80% or more ), low surface resistance (8Ω/□), and high heat resistance (up to 160℃), they can be used as transparent electrodes in not only organic solar cells but also in display devices such as organic EL panels and touch panels.

Conventional transparent polymer electrodes include strongly acidic PSS (polystyrene sulfonate) as the dopant, raising the risk of corrosion of the surrounding parts. Since Nippon Chemi-Con's electrodes do not include PSS, they are neutral and intrinsically have no risk of corrosion.

Further, these electrodes exhibit extremely high catalytic activity, so good properties are realized if they are used in dye-sensitized solar cells.

At present, platinum electrodes are used for the cathode in dye-sensitized solar cells, but if Nippon Chemi-Con's electrodes are used, it is possible to obtain a power generation curve (V-I curve) higher than platinum electrodes as shown in Graph 1. This means that solar cells can be created without using platinum, which is a precious metal. The durability has also been confirmed as equivalent to that of platinum (1000 hours maintained at 85℃).

These results were obtained in Nippon Chemi-Con Kanagawa Research Center established last March. These results have already been presented at the 19th International Conference on Photochemical Conversion and Storage of Solar Energy (IPS-19) held this summer in California, U.S.A., and would be presented for the first time in Japan in CEATEC JAPAN 2012 to be held from October 2, 2012, in Makuhari Messe.

Samples have already been offered to some of our customers, with extremely positive feedback. Nippon Chemi-Con would now focus on building up business for these electrodes by carrying out market research through continued publication in conferences and supplies of samples.
