Step-Down DC/DC Converter Input Ripple and Noise

2022-04-06

●DC/DC converter input noise and ripple, unless filtered, can sometimes be sufficient to interfere with other devices powered from the same source. When necessary, simple methods are available to reduce input noise and the impact it may have on other devices.
●For a DC/DC step-down (buck) converter, the input noise has two components: one at the fundamental switching frequency, commonly referred to as ripple; and an additional component associated with very high frequency ringing that occurs during the switching transitions. Figure 1 displays a typical input ripple and noise waveform for a buck converter with both the saw-tooth ripple and high frequency ringing components visible.
