The UNIMOTION closed-loop stepping system is one of the newest acquisitions in the Unimotion sales program. It offers a complete solution of a stepper motor, drive and cables, and allows easy connection of the entire system (Plug & Drive). The drives are available with different communication protocols, and different motor sizes with the possibility of brakes and IP65 protection and a built-in incremental encoder. The combination of the Unimotion drive and the Unimotion stepper motor enables high resolution (accuracy) and fast response. Thanks to the closed-loop system of drives, position errors due to feedback are automatically corrected.

Advantages of Unimotion Stepper systems

STDF SERVO DRIVES Advantages of STDF Servo Controllers:

Easy programming

Closed-loop control

Fast response

No need for calibration

No tuning

Lower heat generation

Torque improvement

No Gain Tuning

What is "gain tuning" anyway? Gain tuning means adjusting the gain to minimize response time, settling time, and position overrun. The main goal of this tuning is to reduce the error between the desired position (either speed or torque) and the actual value achieved. Most programming environments enable "auto-tuning", which automatically detects and sets the most optimal gain for this system, but somewhere even after "auto-tuning", it is still necessary to manually set certain parameters, which can be very time-consuming. The PID loop is most often used to adjust the parameters, where three parameters are set, proportional, integral, and derivative. The result, however, is essentially the output-to-input ratio. Inside the loop, these parameters determine how and to what extent the drive tries to correct the errors detected by the negative feedback loop. This is not necessary in this case, as the system has already been set with the appropriate parameters for a given application.

No Hunting

What is "no hunting"? These are minor vibrations that are not visible to the naked eye. The engine is not in the position it should be and automatically tries to correct itself by overtaking in the opposite direction, and this is a fairly common occurrence when we have high-gain applications. Here is a solution to lower the gains and losses inaccuracy, or use a Unimotion drive that uses the unique properties of stepper motors and locks in the desired target.

Torque Improvement

The internal DC-DC converter increases the voltage supply, which leads to overcoming higher torque by about 30% at lower and higher speeds. The Unimotion drive is powered by a 24 V supply voltage, which in turn supplies the motor with a voltage of up to 40 V. This is enabled by an internal DC-DC converter. The higher voltage in the motor allows the motor to rotate faster. The current is proportional to the torque that the motor can overcome. Higher current means overcoming higher torques.

Less Heat Generation

The drive automatically controls the motor current according to the load. It also reduces the current when the load is low and of course, increases it when the load is high and with this optimization, it also reduces the heating, thus saving energy.

Various Communication Protocols

Pulse-direction
Pulse-direction refers to a type of digital signalling, used in position control. There
are two types of pulse control:
1-signal mode (Pulse / Direction)
2-signal mode (CW / CCW)

This mode has CW and CCW inputs. The pulse at these inputs determines whether the motor rotates clockwise or counterclockwise.

It contains two signals, one for distance and speed, and the other for the direction of rotation. The actual movement is carried out by pulses received from the controller, i.e, can be arbitrarily set to be for one revolution of the motor, 1000 pulses.

EtherCAT
EtherCAT is the fastest Industrial Ethernet technology. This is a huge benefit for all applications in which the target system is controlled or measured via the bus system. The rapid reaction times work to reduce the wait times during the transitions between process steps, which significantly improves application efficiency.

Ethernet
Ethernet is the standard communication protocol used to connect devices. It is the most widely used technology for local area networking and allows TCP or UDP protocol for sending data (possible to control it with Siemens S7 PLC).
