As the name suggests, the surge is an instantaneous overvoltage that exceeds the normal operating voltage. Its sources are divided into external sources (overvoltage generated on power lines by lightning and switching operations in the power grid) and internal sources (air conditioners, elevators, welding machines, air compressors, and Other inductive loads), according to statistics, in the United States: Direct losses caused by power surges to various industries such as shutdown, time loss, equipment maintenance, premature replacement of equipment, etc. are as high as 26 billion US dollars per year. In China, according to relevant statistics, 63% of electrical products that have problems during the warranty period are due to power surges. Based on the surge (impact) immunity test of GB/T17626.5 IEC61000-4-5, YINT company has compiled and tested the low-voltage DC lightning protection scheme for your reference.

Features

Use a gas discharge tube (large flow device) for rough protection. When there is a ground wire, it is recommended to use a 3-pin gas discharge tube 3R090L(M)-8, but when there is no ground wire, use a 2-pin gas discharge tube 22R090L(M)-8. For fine protection, TVS uses inductors for decoupling, because the response speed of TVS is faster than that of gas discharge tubes. The purpose of using inductors is to discharge most of the energy through gas discharge tubes when a large surge occurs, and the remaining small part remains. The surge is suppressed again by the TVS, finally weakening the surge to a level that the EUT can withstand.

The function of the front-end fuse is to disconnect the circuit in time when an abnormality occurs in the TVS. Select the fuse according to the current of the customer's circuit. Pay attention when selecting the fuse. During the surge test, the instantaneous current is very large, with thousands of amps. At this time, the fuse cannot be disconnected and requires a fuse with strong surge resistance. It is generally recommended to use a slow-blow fuse.
