Maxell Adds the Lineup to High-Capacity Ceramic Packaged All-Solid-State Battery, with Increased Side Length to 15mm
Increased side length to 15mm, double*1 the capacity of the existing product, and capable of supporting a wide range of applications in various fields
high-capacity ceramic packaged all-solid-state battery PSB401515H
Maxell, Ltd. (President and Representative Director: Keiji Nakamura / hereinafter “Maxell”) has developed the "PSB401515H", a high-capacity ceramic packaged all-solid-state battery using a solid sulfide electrolyte, increasing side length to 15mm with double*1 the capacity of existing product, which enables it to support various applications and situations.
Recently, heat resistance and long life have been required for purposes such as temperature sensing in the social infrastructure field or embedded equipment in the medical field, from the viewpoint of use under high temperatures and reduction of maintenance. At the same time, a battery with increased capacity is also required for this purpose as it is frequently used as a power source for communications as well.
Similarly, requests for high-capacity batteries are expected to extend over various fields, such as sensing applications of in-vehicle equipment and wearable devices. Maxell is consequently developing high-capacity batteries based on high energy density technologies.
The newly developed PSB401515H applies high energy density technology relating to the structure and processes that were adopted to the high-capacity ceramic packaged all-solid-state battery (PSB401010H) released in July 2022. By adopting this technology, our new all-solid-state battery obtains both long life and high-capacity characteristics that can be used at temperatures of up to 105°C for 10 years*2.
Maxell has long been studying to increase the size of all-solid-state batteries to respond to the demand for higher capacity.
To increase the size of the battery, the size of the electrode also needs to be increased, for which maintaining uniform filling over the larger electrode has been a challenge. Maxell has succeeded in increasing the size while maintaining various characteristics, such as long life and heat resistance, without considerable change to the specifications of mass production facilities, by improving the compounding method of the electrode materials based on knowledge fostered in the micro battery and magnetic tape businesses.
Features of PSB401515H
1. Realized 16mAh, double*1 the capacity of existing product
2. Usable in a wide temperature range of -50℃ to 125℃, and up to 105℃ for 10 years
3. Long lifetime characteristic (expected lifetime of more than 50 years*3at 37℃) required for applications such as implantable devices
Same as PSB401010H, this product will be produced at the new mass-production line to be built at Kyoto Works t in the spring of 2023.
To solve many social issues, Maxell is developing all-solid-state batteries with high performance and high reliability with four axes: long lifetime, high temperature resistance, high output, and high capacity, which can be used for applications in areas where conventional batteries cannot be used.
Maxell will continue to enhance the battery lineup as well as to proceed with the development of modular components that combine all-solid-state battery with such technologies as wireless power supply and energy harvesting.
