What is a fuse? This is an eXCellent small device that can self destruct in the event of surges or other overcurrent conditions. Why do people create such a device? The reason is very simple, that is to protect other parts of the circuit where the fuse is located. Compared to replacing the entire circuit that may be destroyed, the cost of replacing a fuse is negligible.

Common Sense 1: How to determine if a fuse is blown?

Next, perform a quick test on the multimeter to determine if it is working properly by touching the leads together until a beep is heard or a 0 ohm reading is seen.

  

Now, after confirming that the circuit is powered off, place the leads on both sides of the fuse. If the same beep is heard and the resistance reading of the multimeter is very low, then the fuse is not blown. If no beep is heard and/or the multimeter reads OL, the fuse is blown.

  

Another method of testing fuses is to use a digital multimeter to measure the voltage at both ends of the fuse. This method is very useful if the fuse is difficult to remove from the circuit. To do this, it is necessary to first power up the circuit and then switch the multimeter to voltage measurement mode. Ensure that DC is selected for DC circuits and AC is selected for AC circuits.

  

Take appropriate preventive measures to keep oneself away from dangerous voltages. Place the multimeter leads on both sides of the fuse. If the indicated voltage is low or even non-existent, the fuse is intact. However, if there is a voltage difference (usually the full supply voltage), the fuse has blown.

  

Common Sense 2: How to replace fuses correctly?

A better approach is to replace the faulty fuse with a fuse of the same specification. One thing to note is whether the fuse type is fast or slow. In most cases, slow blown fuses can be replaced by fast blown fuses or slow blown fuses, but they must not be reversed. Slow blow fuses are used in inductive circuits. Motor starting is an example. Although the rated current of the motor is low, it consumes a very high amount of current during startup. When using slow blown fuses, a higher current can be allowed for a short period of time, but not for a long time. In this case, if a quick fuse is used, it will immediately blow when the rated current is exceeded. It is better to continue using devices with the same specifications as the original ones.
