CAN Bus over Plastic Optical Fibre (POF) APPLICATION NOTE
■Interfacing equipment over a serial bus is one of the most common requirements in industrial and automotive electronics. The CAN Bus interconnect protocol is widely used for automotive and large vehicle equipment and machine interfacing for several years. As technology changes new challenges such as increased requirements for galvanic isolation, common mode noise rejection and immunity to electromagnetic interference, challenge the suitability of a traditional copper pair link.
■This application note describes how Firecomms RedLink fibre optic transceivers are ideally suited to provide CAN links over fibre and take advantage of all the benefits of POF fibre as well as a multisource transceiver and cable assembly markets.
■POF fibre links can be used to provide reliable communication that is galvanically isolated, provides complete common mode noise rejection and best-case immunity to electromagnetic interference.
●CONCLUSION
■We have provided two application circuits that may be used to implement fiber based CAN networks at data rates from DC to 10 Mbps. These networks can be used to provide secure, reliable communications which are galvanically isolated, noise immune and reject common mode noise and voltages. Firecomms RedLink family of transmitters and receivers are ideally suited to the harsh environments found in industrial applications.
■For faster networks such as DC-20 MBd the transmitter and receiver can be replaced with Firecomms FT50MxxR and FR50DxxR range of devices. For individual applications Firecomms application support can provide information on CAN node interfacing and associated schematics.
