According to different uses, thermal camera can be divided into two types: imaging and temperature measurement: imaging thermal imagers are mainly used for target tracking and monitoring, and are mostly used for national defense, military, and field monitoring. Thermal imaging cameras for temperature measurement are mainly used for temperature detection, and are used in predictive maintenance of industrial equipment and scientific research and product development in universities and research institutes.

According to the refrigeration method, it can be divided into cooled type and uncooled type; According to the wavelength, it can be divided into long-wave type, middle wave and short-wave type; according to the use method, it can be divided into handheld type, desktop type, online type, etc.

1)  Long wave handheld thermal imager

Namely infrared wave length in the spectral range of 7-12 microns, this type is the most popular one at present due to its features of minimal atmospheric absorption.

Since the thermal imager works in the long-wave length and is not interfered by sunlight, it is especially suitable for on-site detection of equipment during the day, such as substations, high-voltage grid and other equipment testing.

2)Middle wavelength thermal cameras detect infrared wavelengths in 2-5 microns, and they deliver higher resolution with accurate readings. The images are not as detailed as those produced by long wavelength thermal cameras, due to an increased amount of atmospheric absorption within this spectral range.

3)  Short-wave handheld thermal imager

Infrared wave length in the spectral range of 0.9-1.7 microns

3) On-line monitoring thermal imager

It is mainly used for online monitoring in industrial production.

4) Research infrared camera

Since the specification of this type infrared cameras are relatively high, it is mainly used for research and product development, most of which are used in universities, institutes etc.
