SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sep. 9, 2015– InvenSense, the leading provider of intelligent sensor system on chip (SoC) for Motion and Sound, announced the world’s widest full-scale range (FSR) 6-axis integrated MEMS (3-axis gyroscope + 3-axis accelerometer) device, InvenSense’s new ICM-20601, for high-impact sports and wearable applications. Many of today’s wearable and sports solutions, which analyze the motion of a user’s golf or tennis swings, soccer ball kicks, or basketball activities, require higher than currently available ±2000 dps (degrees per second) FSR for gyroscope and ±16g FSR for the accelerometer to better ensure that critical data is not lost at the point of high-impact or high-speed rotation. The ICM-20601 SoC offers the smallest size, lowest profile, and lowest power in conjunction with its industry-leading high FSR. With an extended FSR range of ±4000 dps for the gyroscope and ±32g for the accelerometer, the ICM-20601 enables precise analysis of contact sports applications providing continuous motion sensor data before, during, and after impact providing more accurate feedback to the end-user and enabling new markets and applications.

“High-impact sports can saturate the gyroscope and accelerometer at the point of contact or during very high rotation rate. InvenSense’s new solution helps to mitigate this common issue and can benefit a wide variety of applications, including concussion analysis,” said Eitan Medina, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management at InvenSense. “As InvenSense continues to improve technology and performance, the ICM-20601 with its unrivaled FSR and low noise will enable OEMs and developers of new sensor applications to collect data during the most critical juncture of a golf or tennis swing, allowing continuous motion data to be streamed from the motion pod for accurate motion analysis processing.”

Wearables and sports applications are emerging markets for motion and audio sensor devices, and the market is expected to grow to 190M units by 2019 as greater sensor intelligence is incorporated into a wide variety of new products. InvenSense is currently a leading supplier to these markets, with design success in a number of applications such as smartwatches, activity trackers, smart glasses, HMDs, and smart headsets. The ICM-20601 is available in mass-production quantities now.

Product Specifications

The 6-Axis Inertial Sensor ICM-20601 flexible programmable gyroscope FSR ranges of ±500 dps, ±1,000 dps, ±2,000 dps, and ±4,000 dps, coupled with the programmable accelerometer FSR ranges of ±4g, ±8g, ±16g, and ±32g, allow the OEM to pick the best motion range for any activity or context. The ICM-20601 SoC includes integrated self-test and offset temperature compensation, delivering ease of integration and consistent performance. Other industry-leading features include a 3x3x0.75mm plastic 16-pin LGA package, on-chip 16-bit ADCs, outstanding rate noise performance of only 0.013 DPS/√Hz, built-in FIFO, programmable digital filters, and programmable interrupts. These industry-leading SoCs are available with I²C and high-speed SPI serial interfaces, along with a flexible operating range of 1.71V to 3.45V.
