Galaxy Watch5 Series Uses Melexis Contactless Temperature Sensor MLX90632 for Menstrual Cycle Tracking
Melexis, a global microelectronics engineering company, supplies its unique MLX90632 temperature sensor to Samsung’s Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro. The non-contact temperature measurement with enhanced accuracy enables menstrual cycle tracking. Reliable continuous temperature monitoring opens a wide range of new applications in sports, health, and other domains.
Samsung uses the MLX90632 contactless temperature sensor in its latest Galaxy Watch5 series. Many companies have tried contact sensors which require a tight touch of the watch with the skin for accurate data gathering. This condition is difficult to achieve in real-life applications, leading to potentially unreliable data. Samsung solved this problem through the integration of Melexis’ contactless temperature sensor in its Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro.
Samsung’s press release:
“Consumers can now easily track their menstrual cycle right from their wrist, combining Natural Cycles’ innovative fertility technology with Samsung’s superior temperature sensor to provide a more holistic understanding of their health and well-being,” said Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “This is another demonstration of Samsung’s open collaboration philosophy with other industry leaders to create better health experiences.”
“We are excited that our infrared temperature sensor helps Samsung open up a world of new possibilities”, says Damien Macq, Vice President of the Sense & Light Business Unit at Melexis. “We miniaturized the MLX90632 for integration within wearable health devices. The Galaxy Watch5 series is the first mass-market smartwatch to provide built-in, accurate, non-contact temperature measurement for personal health monitoring. We are making accurate skin thermometry the next go-to feature in this marketplace.”
