Board-to-Board Connectors are essential miniature coupling plugs and sockets that directly connect power and signals between printed circuit boards (PCBs) through their pins. This article focuses on the function of board-to-board connectors and how to select their parameters.

The function of Board-to-Board Connectors
In electronic manufacturing, equipment may need to fit within available space, and if the PCBs tend to occupy too much space during the design stage, the device may be split into two or more boards. Board-to-board connectors can connect power and signals between these boards, completing all the necessary connections.

Board-to-board connectors can simplify the PCB design process. Smaller PCBs are typically used in manufacturing equipment that cannot accommodate larger PCBs. Whether squeezing components onto one single PCB or dividing them among multiple PCBs, power consumption needs to be considered.

Additionally, using board-to-board connectors simplifies the production and testing of electronic equipment. Simplified testing in electronics manufacturing means huge cost savings. High-density PCBs have more traces and components per unit area, and it is best to design equipment or products with several interconnecting mid-density boards rather than a single high-density board.

How to Select Board-to-Board Connector Parameters

Pay attention to pins and pitch
The number of pins and pitch are the basic criteria for selecting connectors. The selection of board-to-board connector pins depends on the number of signals to be connected, and for some SMT connectors, too many pins are not suitable. This is because, during the SMT soldering process, the connector plastic will be deformed by high temperature, causing the pins to become de-soldered due to central bulging.

Pay attention to electrical performance
Connector electrical performance mainly includes maximum current, contact resistance, insulation resistance, and voltage resistance. When connecting high-power sources, attention should be paid to the maximum current of the board-to-board connector, while for transmitting high-frequency signals such as LVDS, contact resistance should be taken into account. Board-to-board connectors typically have low and constant contact resistance, usually ranging from tens of mΩ to over a hundred mΩ.

Pay attention to environmental performance
Choose according to the specific application environment. For example, when the application environment is relatively humid, choose a board-to-board connector with higher moisture resistance and salt spray resistance to ensure that its metal contacts are not corroded. In the industrial control field, board-to-board connectors need to have a high vibration and shock resistance to prevent them from falling off during vibration.

Pay attention to mechanical performance
Connector mechanical performance includes insertion force, mechanical anti-misalignment, and others. Mechanical anti-misalignment is essential for board-to-board connectors. Once inserted reversely, it can cause irreversible damage to the circuit.
