NXP PMIC solution for Espressif ESP32 SoC

●Scope:
■This application note introduces NXP power management integrated circuit (PMIC) PF1550 enabling and powering Espressif ESP32 system-on-chip (SoC) in typical Wi-Fi phone application. It shows that PF1550 could fully meet system power management requirement with describing general system interconnection, power supply solution, power mode control, battery charging capability. One typical schematic and bill of material is provided as well.
●Description:
■Espressif ESP32 SoC is an MCU based solution with integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. It mainly consists of three series: ESP32-S, ESP32-C and ESP32, which focus on IoT, wireless controller and portable device application.
■The PF1550 is NXP PMIC designed with three high-efficiency buck converter, three linear regulators, real-time clock (RTC) supply, and battery linear charger. It also supports different power modes. These highly integrated features simplify the system design and reduce overall system BOM cost. PF1550 can provide power for a complete battery-powered system, including application SoC, memory, and system peripherals.
■Figure 1 shows one typical connection with PF1550 to power the whole Wi-Fi phone system which is based on ESP32 SoC. Two switcher, three low dropouts (LDOs) and one always-on regulator VSNVS from PF1550 provide power supply to SoC. Peripherals include ESP32, flash, audio, LED display, and keypad. These power supplies default voltage and power-up sequence configuration is managed by PF1550 one time programmable (OTP) which saves system complexity and customer development time. One battery charger is integrated in PF1550 which supports charging Li-ion or Li-Po battery. PF1550 features different power modes to optimize current consumption based on Wi-Fi phone system requirement to extend battery life. Coil cell battery is backup power for always-on regulator VSNVS. Coil cell is the input of VSNVS to make sure that ESP32 RTC is still alive once VBUSIN and VBAT voltage is out of working range.
■MC32PF1550A3EP part number is used in this application note. Customer could also choose another PF1550 part number based on actual system requirement.
