Power savings is a significant benefit of IoT device networks. In this Tech Talks Session, Field Applications Engineer Mike Glazebrook describes the power-optimizing features of the EFR32BG22 Wireless SoC, which can enable IoT devices to operate up to 10 years on a single coin cell battery.

EFR32BG22 Wireless SoC

EFR32BG22 (BG22) is our most energy-friendly wireless system-on-chip (SoC). Equipped with an Arm® Cortex®-M33 core, BG22 SoCs achieve extremely low power levels while in an operational sleep state down to 1.4 µA. These devices are Bluetooth 5.2 compliant, support direction finding and low-power Bluetooth mesh networks and integrate enhanced security features such as Secure Boot with Root of Trust (RTSL).

Unique BG22 SoC Features for Battery Optimization

With four energy-saving modes and supported by the Simplicity Studio Energy Profiler tool, which provides live-capture energy measurement of a user's system, BG22 is well suited for IoT devices requiring high performance and low energy consumption.

The Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) software stack, provided through the Simplicity Studio IDE, optimizes power consumption by using API event handlers. These handlers notify applications of Bluetooth LE related events. If there are no events to be addressed, the Bluetooth stack automatically powers down the device to the lowest available power state. Integrated software timers allow users to easily manage actions occurring at set time intervals by setting specific wakeup times for these events.

Three primary BG22 SoC hardware blocks provide significant power savings:

  • Energy Management Unit – includes a dc-dc buck regulator and VDD comparator that saves approximately 25 percent energy and a precision temperature sensor with autonomous readings

  • Clock Management Unit – enables optimal clock setting adjustments based on use case

  • Radio Unit with RF Sense – power amplifier extends battery life in personal area networks, offers a deep sleep (< 200 nA) storage mode, and a unique RF wake signal capability

These features combine to make the BG22 SoC the lowest power Bluetooth LE solution on the market today.

BG22 SoCs are available in three variations that range in flash density from 352 kB to 512 kB and with maximum output power from 0 dBm up to 6 dBm. Target applications for these devices include gateways, asset tags, beacons, wearable devices, and mesh networks. BG22 modules will be available later this year.
