What Does 30pf Mean for a Crystal Oscillator?
What does 30PF mean for a crystal oscillator
30PF for a crystal oscillator refers to an external capacitor of 30PF. Generally, the maximum load capacitance option for a passive crystal oscillator is 20PF. PF is a unit of capacitance, but it often appears in actual applications of passive crystal oscillators. Because the choice of capacitance can directly affect the start-up time, output frequency accuracy and frequency stability of a passive crystal oscillator.
In the crystal oscillator data sheet, PF refers to the load capacitance of a passive crystal oscillator, such as 20 in 20PF is its value. 20PF is one of the most common crystal oscillator loads. Passive crystal oscillators with different load capacitances generally need to match external capacitors of different values. Please note here that the load capacitance is not equal to the external capacitance.
In the passive crystal oscillator application solution for portable electronic products, a passive crystal oscillator with a smaller load capacitance is generally selected, because for passive crystal oscillators of the same package size and the same frequency, the smaller the load, the lower the energy consumption. For example, a passive crystal oscillator with a load capacitance of 7PF consumes less energy than a passive crystal oscillator with a load capacitance of 12.5.
It should be pointed out here that in the application of active crystal oscillator with square wave (CMOS) output, there is also a load (here called output load: Output Load) indicator, and the output load is generally 15PF by default. Further explanation, this means that the quartz crystal selected inside is an oscillation circuit formed with the oscillator IC based on 15PF. This is also the most common active crystal oscillator output load mode.
