FTDI‘s ICs FT232RN, FT4232HA, FT-X Can Be Integrated into ADAS
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These are technologies integrated into vehicles to enhance driver safety and improve the overall driving experience. ADAS employs various sensors, cameras, radar and other technologies to gather information about the vehicle’s surroundings and assist the driver in making informed decisions. The primary goal of ADAS is to reduce the likelihood of accidents and enhance overall road safety.
Key features of ADAS include:
• Collision Warning and Avoidance
• Lane Departure Warning and Lane-Keeping Assist
• Adaptive Cruise Control
• Blind Spot Detection
• Parking Assistance
• Traffic Sign Recognition
• Automatic Emergency Braking
• Cross Traffic Alert
USB (Universal Serial Bus) with ADAS is possible with FTDI products to connect to a vehicle’s onboard computer or infotainment system via a USB port. Here are some usage scenarios:
• ADAS Calibration
• Software Updates
• Data Logging and Analysis
The block diagram below shows how these usage scenarios can be integrated at a high level.
The USB port on the car is connected to a phone, PC or tablet. The application software controls the FTDI IC which is connected to a processor inside the smartwatch. FTDI ICs offer various communication protocols such as UART/RS232/RS485/RS422, I2C, SPI and more depending on the system needs.

Other applications within ADAS using FTDI ICs are detailed below:
Sensor Expansion
FTDI ICs are able to connect to the USB Host on embedded processors allowing for increased number of interfaces which can then connect to various sensors within the car, i.e. cameras, ultrasonic sensors, GPS, fatigue detection and more!
With one single USB connection, you can add multiple additional communication interfaces to the system through various protocols including:
•UART/RS232/RS485/RS422
•I2C
•SPI
•FIFO
Recommended ICs:
FT-X Series
High Speed Series: FT-H, FT-HPQ, FT-HA
BLE Expansion
Another typical application example is BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) expansion.
FTDI ICs are capable to connect to the USB Host on embedded processors allowing for expanding the number of BLE modules.
FTDI’s UART communication interface can interact with BLE modules allowing for Bluetooth to be added to the ADAS system. A maximum of four ports can be added with our FT4232H/FT4232HA.
The block diagram below shows how this can be implemented with FTDI’s FT4232H ICs.
Recommended ICs:
FT4232H / FT4232HA for maximum ports
High Speed Series: FT-H, FT-HPQ, FT-HA
