XELA Robotics Demonstrates Latest Tactile Sensors at ICRA 2024 in Yokohama
We are pleased to announce that XELA Robotics had a successful exhibition at the International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) 2024 in Yokohama. Our participation allowed us to showcase our latest technology in tactile sensing and AI integration for robotics, drawing significant interest from attendees to our tactile sensor demonstrations.
As part of this event, we were featured in a ProRobots video, which includes an interview with our CEO, Dr. Alexander Schmitz.
Highlights from ICRA 2024
In the ProRobots video, Dr. Schmitz discusses the challenges and opportunities of applying AI in robotics. He points out that while AI has made progress in virtual environments, its application in physical robots has been limited by constraints in tactile sensing. Current tactile sensors are often too large, not durable, complex to integrate, lack distributed 3D sensing, and are expensive.
Potential Real-World Applications for uSkin
At ICRA 2024, we presented our latest tactile sensors that address these challenges. Our sensors provide distributed 3D sensing with a sensitivity of 0.1 grams, a wide sensing range, and resilience to overloading. Their compact design allows for easy integration into various robotic hands and grippers, making them versatile and practical.
Our tactile sensors have potential applications in several areas. In factory automation, they could support mass customisation with a range of tasks, enabling efficient handling of various objects and materials. In warehouse automation, our sensors could enhance piece-picking processes with precise tactile feedback. In agriculture, they could facilitate the gentle handling of delicate produce like tomatoes, reducing damage and waste.
Integration with Robotic Systems
We showcased the versatility of our sensors through their integration into various robotic systems. The Hand-E gripper from Robotiq was the main gripper used in our primary demo, this demo showcased the sensing, grasping, and pick-and-place of various fragile objects, made possible by our sensors. Additionally, we equipped the Allegro Hand, created by Wonik Robotics, with 368 three-axis tactile sensors to demonstrate the large number of sensing points we are able to integrate into a robotic hand.
Our experience at ICRA 2024 in Yokohama was very productive and a great platform to demonstrate our technology. Thank you to everyone who visited our booth, engaged with our demos, and supported our efforts.
