THE COMPANY

Cactus IoT is a sustainable IoT engineering Catalan company with more than 15 years of experience with software and hardware development. Cactus IoT specializes in end-to-end electronic solutions that cover the whole IoT market. They serve a variety of customers, including those in logistics, agriculture, smart cities, home automation, and asset tracking. The company is based in Catalonia, Spain, a premier digital development area.

THE CHALLENGE

One of Cactus IoT’s clients, Neu Boots, a Catalan ski boot company, needed to build a hardware board that could collect and send data collected by their revolutionary boot’s integrated sensors. Located in the insole and tibia of the skier with different measuring points, such as, inside pressure, loads, leg extension, speed, orientation, and tracking, the sensor uses NB-IoT and GNSS for real-time analysis. The company needed to find an antenna manufacturer that could cover NB-IoT and GNSS in an efficient way under challenging weather conditions and in a small form factor.

THE SOLUTION

Cactus IoT chose Ignion for their Neu Boots design project based on previous successful connectivity projects delivered by Ignion’s Virtual Antenna® components and design recommendations. Cactus’ CEO, Israel Blanco, knew the first step to start with the board’s design was to use the Antenna Intelligence Cloud™ for antenna selection, placement, and expected efficiency report to minimize risks and resources. Choosing the DUO mXTEND™ and TRIO mXTEND™ reduced signal loss and improved the accuracy of location tracking due to their powerful performance and slim design. This makes them ideal solutions for a variety of platforms, including tracking devices, IoT sensors, and IoT cellular/ISM modules. It can perform in a wide range of frequencies, which is particularly useful for IoT sensors in harsh environments like the Neu Boots project. Additionally, Ignion’s Virtual Antenna® components allow for better signal reception in remote locations, improving the efficiency of data collection.

“Here in our lab, we need to adapt a lot of antennas to different scenarios as fast and reliable as we can […] we are able to measure the estimated antenna performance, adjust its components, and do testing and tuning, but that would involve spending a lot of technical resources and money to do it in an efficient way. With the Antenna Intelligence Cloud™, we can get all that data without physical prototyping completely free in less than 24h.”Israel Blanco, CEO Cactus.
