Both DC and AC power sources require the use of electronic Transformers (soft magnetic electromagnetic components) made of soft magnetic cores. Although there are already air-core electronic transformers and piezoelectric ceramic transformers that do not require soft magnetic cores, so far, the vast majority of electronic transformers in power supply devices still use soft magnetic cores.

Electronic transformers, along with semiconductor switching devices, semiconductor rectifier devices, and capacitors, are known as the four main components of power supply devices. According to its role in the power supply device, electronic transformers can be divided into:

1) power transformers, power transformers, rectifier transformers, inverter transformers, switch transformers, and pulse power transformers that perform voltage and power conversion functions;

2) broadband transformers, audio transformers, mid cycle transformers that transmit broadband, audio frequency, mid cycle power, and signals;

3) pulse transformer that plays a role in transmitting pulses, driving and triggering signals, driving transformer, and triggering transformer;

4) An isolation transformer that serves as the primary and secondary insulation isolation, and a shielding transformer that serves as a shielding;

5) A phase number transformation transformer that acts as a single phase change three-phase or three-phase to single-phase transformer, and a phase transformation transformer (phase shifter) that changes the output phase;

6) A frequency doubling or dividing transformer that changes the output frequency;

7) A matching transformer that changes the matching effect between output impedance and load impedance;

8) A voltage stabilizing transformer (including a constant voltage transformer) or a current stabilizing transformer that stabilizes the output voltage or current, and a voltage regulating transformer that regulates the output voltage;

9) Filter inductor for AC and DC filtering;

10) Electromagnetic interference filtering inductor that suppresses electromagnetic interference, and noise filtering inductor that suppresses noise;

11) An absorption inductor that absorbs surge current and a buffer inductor that slows down the rate of current change;

12) An energy storage inductor that serves as an energy storage device and a commutation inductor that assists in the commutation of semiconductor switches;

13) Magnetic switch inductors and transformers that act as switches;

14) Controllable inductors and saturation inductors that regulate inductance;

15) voltage transformers, current transformers, pulse transformers, DC transformers, zero flux transformers, weak current transformers, zero sequence current transformers, and hall current and voltage detectors that transform voltage, current, or pulse detection signals. From the above list, it can be seen that whether it is DC power supply, AC power supply, or special power supply, electronic transformers are indispensable.

Some people define power sources as DC and AC power sources that undergo high-frequency switching. When introducing the role of soft magnetic electromagnetic components in power supply technology, various electromagnetic components in high-frequency switching power supplies are often cited as examples. According to a market survey report on the electronic transformer industry, various transformers dominate the soft magnetic electromagnetic components used in electronic power supplies. Therefore, transformers are used as representatives of soft magnetic components in electronic power supplies and are referred to as "electronic transformers".
