Factors Affecting the Stability of Industrial Routers
Industrial Router in the Internet of Things industry provides the function of converting 5G/4G/3G networks into WiFi, and the front end can access various sensor devices to meet the requirements of high efficiency and low latency of data transmission in the industrial field. An Industrial Switch is a network device used for electrical (optical) signal forwarding. It can provide a dedicated electrical signal path for any two network nodes accessing the switch. The most common switch is an Ethernet switch.
So what's the difference between an Industrial Switch and an Industrial Router? Let's take a look!
1. Different levels of work
While the original industrial switches operated at the data link layer (Layer 2) of the OSI/RM open architecture, industrial 4G routers were originally designed to operate at the network layer of the OSI model.Because the industrial switch works in the second layer of OSI (data link layer), its working principle is relatively simple, while the industrial 4G router works in the third layer of OSI (network layer), so it can get more protocol information and make more intelligent forwarding decisions.
2. Different functions
The Industrial Router is used as an indirect network to connect different networks; The industrial switch is to expand the LAN access point so that more terminals can be connected to the Internet.
3. Different processing protocols and support protocols
Industrial switches use the physical address or MAC address to determine the destination of the forwarded data. The industrial 4G router uses the ID number (IP address) of different networks to determine the address of data forwarding. The IP address is implemented in software and describes the network on which the device is located. These Layer 3 addresses are sometimes referred to as protocol addresses or network addresses. The MAC address is usually provided by the hardware, assigned by the network card manufacturer, solidified into the network card, and generally cannot be changed. IP addresses are usually assigned automatically by the network administrator or the system.
4. The traditional industrial switch can only divide the collision domain, but not the broadcast domain; Industrial 4G routers can divide broadcast domains.
The network segments connected by the industrial switch still belong to the same broadcast domain, and the broadcast packet is propagated on all the network segments connected by the industrial switch, which can lead to communication support and security vulnerabilities in some cases. The network segment connected by the industrial 4G router will be allocated to different broadcast domains, and the broadcast data will not pass through the industrial 4G router. Although the industrial switches above the third layer have VLAN functions and can also divide broadcast domains, the sub-broadcast domains cannot communicate with each other, and the communication between them still requires industrial 4G routers.
5. Firewall function
Industrial Router provides the service of the firewall. It only forwards the data packet of a specific address and does not forward the data packet that does not support the routing protocol and the data packet that seeks the destination network, so as to prevent the broadcast storm.
6. Different application fields
As mentioned above, the Industrial Router is connected to the Internet through the 4G/3G wireless network and can access the terminal equipment through the wifi wireless network. Therefore, Industrial Router is common in the M2m industry in the Internet of Things industry chain. Such as self-service terminals, smart grids, intelligent transportation, smart home, finance, mobile POS terminal, supply chain automation, industrial automation, intelligent building, fire protection, public safety, environmental protection, meteorology, digital medical treatment, remote sensing survey, military, space exploration, agriculture, forestry, water, coal mine, petrochemical, and other fields. The industrial switch is connected to the network through the wired network, and the common one is the Ethernet switch. Therefore, the equipment is usually used in projects with convenient indoor wiring. For example, smart energy, urban rail, integrated pipe gallery, intelligent transportation, smart city, mining and metallurgical industry, crude oil and petrochemical industry, new energy technology, intelligent factories, ships, military, building security, and other fields.
