The RS485 Ethernet converter is becoming increasingly important for the following reasons:

Compatibility of existing infrastructure: Many existing monitoring, control, and automation systems use the RS485 serial communication protocol as the data transmission standard. The RS485 Ethernet converter can connect these legacy devices to the network to communicate with modern Internet and cloud platforms without replacing the entire system, thereby protecting existing investments.

Long-distance communication support: Compared with the common RS232 interface, the RS485 serial port has stronger anti-interference capability and a longer transmission distance. RS485 Ethernet converter can extend the transmission distance of the RS485 serial port by establishing a communication bridge in LAN or Wan, which makes it possible to monitor and control remote devices.

Resource sharing and centralized management: RS485 Ethernet converter can easily realize resource sharing and centralized management after connecting sensors, actuators, and other devices to the network. Through unified control and monitoring, users can remotely manage and configure multiple RS485 devices, which improves operational efficiency and flexibility.

Data collection and analysis: RS485 Ethernet converter can be used to collect data from sensors, instruments, and other equipment, and send them to the back-end cloud platform for data analysis and processing. This provides enterprises with the ability of real-time monitoring and operation and maintenance management, as well as the basis of intelligent decision-making and optimization.

User customizability: The RS485 Ethernet converter provides flexible expansion interfaces and configuration options, allowing users to customize according to their needs. Users can select the serial port type, rate, data format, and other parameters according to specific industrial protocols and communication requirements to meet the needs of different application scenarios.

RS485 Ethernet converter plays an indispensable role in the modern Internet of Things and intelligent systems. It is compatible with existing infrastructure, supports long-distance communication, realizes resource sharing and centralized management, and provides data acquisition and analysis functions. With the development of Internet of Things technology and the expansion of its application scope, the importance of the RS485 Ethernet converter has become increasingly prominent.

Why should the RS485 bus be connected hand in hand

RS485 does not support arbitrary topology, mainly because arbitrary topology will produce a large number of standing waves and reflections at the branch. This is mainly due to the impedance discontinuity.

Impedance discontinuity: When a signal suddenly encounters a cable with little or no impedance at the end of the transmission line, the signal will cause reflection at this point. The principle of signal reflection is similar to the reflection of light from one medium into another. To eliminate this reflection, a terminating resistor of the same size as the characteristic impedance of the cable must be connected across the end of the cable to make the impedance of the cable continuous. Because the transmission of signals on the cable is bidirectional, a termination resistor of the same size can be connected across the other end of the communication cable.

Impedance mismatch: Another cause of signal reflection is the impedance mismatch between the data transceiver and the transmission cable. In high-frequency circuits, when the frequency of the signal is very high, the wavelength of the signal is very short. When the wavelength is as short as the length of the transmission line, the reflected signal superimposed on the original signal will change the shape of the original signal. If the characteristic impedance of the transmission line does not match the load impedance, reflections occur at the load. The reflection caused by this reason is mainly manifested in the confusion of the whole network data when the communication line is in idle mode.

When the signal is transmitted to the end of the bus, the transient impedance changes suddenly (taking RSM485ECHT as an example, the impedance changes from 120Ω to 96kΩ), which causes the signal to be reflected and affects the quality of the signal.

When power consumption is required and the communication distance is long, it is recommended to select a bus that supports any topology, such as POWERBUS, MBUS, etc.
