Design for Testability – Test for Designability
The cost to produce a printed circuit assembly comes primarily from the cost of components, the cost of manufacturing and the cost of test. Test can comprise as much as 30% of the cost of building a product. If a product is manufactured with defects, alarge penalty is paid in testing and repair. Thus, the concept of designing for profitability logically includes design for manufacturability (DFM) – manufacturing at the lowest feasible cost and lowest rate of defect introduction – and design for test ability (DFT). In fact by increasing test coverage and defect isolation and diagnosis,DFT becomes a key ingredient in designing profitability into a product.
