UltraSMR Technology is a collection of hardware, controller, and read channel technologies developed by Western Digital. It significantly enhances the capacity advantage of Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) over Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) HDDs. The technology achieves this through a combination of advanced recording subsystems, large block encoding, increased parity formats, OptiNAND technology, and proprietary firmware and algorithms. UltraSMR allows for more aggressive track spacing, improved areal density, and increased drive capacity, addressing the need for higher capacities in large data center deployments to meet Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) requirements.
