FAQs: Polarization Scramblers

2022-02-07
●Description:
■The PSM-003 is a compact, simple-to-use module suitable for applications that require a fixed, relatively slow (<60tt rad/s continuous or <5 points/s discrete) scrambling rate. The scrambling type and rate are determined by the configuration ordered.
■The PSM-002 is a miniature polarization scrambler designed for hand held and field instruments. Its size and power consumption are larger than those of the PSM-003i but much smaller than those of the PCD-003/005. It can also have an extremely wide operating temperature range (-35 to 70°C). It operates on a discrete, random scrambling model, in which random sets of control voltages are input to the different channels of the polarization controller at a user-selected frequency. It has a single preset center wavelength and a relatively wide operating wavelength range. It can be controlled via RS-232 using a special cable provided with the module. It can be used to mitigate polarization dependent effects, or to generate random SOPs for measurement applications.
■The PCD-003 and 005 are high frequency, resonance based scramblers primarily used to randomize the SOP to average out polarization dependent effects. They are based on continuous sinusoidal waveform scrambling, with each channel driven at a different resonance frequency. The PCD-003 has no remote interfacei but the PCD-005 can be remote controlled via an RS-232 communication port on the digital interface adapter board (ADB-001) to turn the module on/off; or change the operating wavelength to any of 6 settings (980nm: 1060nm, 131 Onm,1480nm, 1550nm: 1600nm). Customers who use 980 nm or 1060 nm wavelengths need to specify this during the ordering process. The standard PCD-005 covers only 1310, 1480: 1550, and 1600 center wavelengths. Simple LabView based control software is provided with the PCD-005. With the microprocessor controller, the polarization scrambler performance can be dynamically optimized with the temperature and wavelength.
■The PCD-104 provides the same functions as the PCD-005 in an instrument form with RS-232, Ethernet, and GPIB interfaces.
■The MPC-20X and PSY-201 are more general purpose polarization control and measurement instruments that include built-in polarization scrambling functions. They can generate multiple types of scrambling patterns for different purposes with user-controllable rates. These include Triangle scrambling (continuous pattern suitable for PDL measurement), Rayleigh scrambling (continuous pattern that emulates SOP variation in fiber systems), Tornado scrambling (continuous pattern designed for SOP tracking speed testing), and Discrete scrambling (random generation of discrete points; the same function as the PSM-002). These instruments have RS-232, USB, Ethernet, and GPIB interfaces, and come with software.
