NXP PMIC solution for Renesas R-Car E3 Processor

2021-09-07
●Scope:
The application note describes the power solution using NXP PMIC PF71 to supply Renesas R-Car E3, including power up/down sequence of system power rails, and the safety features enabling the system to meet the ASIL B system functional safety requirements. It also includes specific connections between PMIC and MCU, schematic diagram, and bill of material which can greatly facilitate user application design.
●Description:
■The R-Car E3 is a Renesas processor used for 3D graphics clusters, that provides enhanced 3D graphics rendering performance. The R-Car-E3 system offers the functional safety and security functions essential for connected cars as the role of human-machine interface (HMI) becomes more important. The power requirements of the R-Car E3 system include the power rails and functional safety monitoring. Using PMIC integrated with functional safety features simplifies the power supply design of the system.
■The PF71 is a Functional Safety (FuSa) power management integrated circuit (PMIC) designed for high performance processors. PF71 built-in, one-time programmable(OTP) memory stores key startup configurations, drastically reducing external components typically used to set output voltage and sequence of external regulators. Regulator parameters are adjustable through high-speed I²C after startup offering flexibility for different system states. PF71 is easy to incorporate into customized power solutions for diverse automotive applications that have different power and FuSa requirements. This application note explains how the PF71 is capable of powering R-Car E3 processor and the ease to achieve the FuSa target.
