DuraFlash EDSFF MDC7000 PCIe NVMe SSD White Paper
■The SMART Modular MDC7000 enterprise-class SSD, available in the Enterprise and Datacenter SSD Form Factor (EDSFF) E.1S form factor, meets the needs of high-performance compute and storage servers. It is an ideal solution for capturing, storing and analyzing very large amounts of data. The high performance E1.S form factor and 12V operation is specifically optimized for scale-out main storage in servers. The module is available in capacity up to 8TB at TLC mode and starting as low as 240GB at pSLC mode.
■The EDSFF form factor standard, defined by the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), is designed to be an optimized Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) Non-Volatile Memory Express™ (NVMe™) SSD form factor solution for servers and storage systems in the data center, which improve flexibility, storage density, modular scaling, serviceability, and more efficient cooling, optimized for 1U appliances.
■The Enterprise and Datacenter 1U Short SSD Form Factor (E1.S), in particular, is a flexible, power efficient building block for hyper-scale and enterprise compute nodes and storage and is superior to the alternative high-capacity enterprise-class SSD in half-height half-length (HHHL) add-in card (AIC) and 2.5” U.2 SSD form factors. The M.2 22mm x 110mm (M.2 22110) SSD form factor, a standard defined by the Peripheral Component Interconnect Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG) has increasingly been utilized in hyper-scale data centers due to the low-cost structure, flexibility, and scalability of multiple drives per server, but revealed challenges in hot plug /serviceability, thermals and overheating, and scaling to high capacities. E1.S solves those problems while maintaining a small and efficient form factor. The E1.S form factor is slightly wider at 31.5mm, but with similar length (111.5mm) as an M.2 22110. The E1.S can also accommodate up to twice the number of NAND Flash packaged components on the printed circuit board (PCB) for increased capacity. When mounted vertically in a 1U server, it offers the best packing efficiency and higher storage capacity compared to other SSD form factors available for a given volume of space in the server.
