MCP16251 Very Low Input Voltage Boost Converter Design Guideline APPLICATION NOTES

2021-07-12
●INTRODUCTION:
■This Technical Brief aims to offer a short guideline for applications that require a very low start-up voltage, such as energy harvesting or wireless sensors, by using a low quiescent current boost switching regulator, alongside other auxiliary circuitry.
■For demonstration purposes,a MCP16251 synchronous step-up DC-DC switching regulator has been selected. Its main features consist of the low quiescent current, the PFM/PWM mode of operation and the True Output Disconnect. The latter is very important for this kind of application because the input voltage source is usually weak(due to its high internal resistance) and therefore sequencing needs to be implemented in order to allow charging the output capacitors(which store the harvested energy)very smoothly, without collapsing the input.
●MCP16251 KEY FEATURES:
■Up to 96% Efficiency
■Inrush Current Limiting and Internal Soft Start(1.5 ms, typical)
■Shutdown Current: 0.6 μA, typical
■650 mA Typical Peak Input Current Limit:
▲IOUT > 100 mA @ 3.3V VOUT, 1.2V VIN
▲IOUT > 250 mA @ 3.3V VOUT, 2.4V VIN
▲IOUT > 225 mA @ 5.0V VOUT, 3.3V VIN
■Low Device Quiescent Current:
▲Output Quiescent Current: 4 μA, typical
▲No Load Input Current: 14 μA, typical
■Automatic Pulse Frequency Modulation/PulseWidth Modulation (PFM/PWM) Operation:
▲Low PFM Output Ripple: 150 mV, typical
▲PWM Operation: 500 kHz
■Selectable, Logic Controlled, Shutdown States:
▲True Output Disconnect Option (MCP16251)
▲Input-to-Output Bypass Option (MCP16252)
