TMR91xx Iuitiazation Coils and Utilization Method for Low Hysteresis Mangnetic Sensing

2020-09-30
MultiDimension’s(MDT's)Tunneling Magneto-Resistive (TMR) sensors comprised of Magnetic Tunnel Junctions (MTJs) that are fabricated using thin film ferromagnetic materials, such as Permalloy, in order to provide a multilayer structure that produces a large resistance change in response to a magnetic field, and also in some cases to provide flux concentrators, which magnify the magnetic field in order to further increase sensitivity. These thin film ferromagnetic materials are similar to the ferromagnetic film used in hard disk drives in that the application of a magnetic field may change the magnetic domain structure originally programmed into the ferromagnetic material.Ideally, the ferromagnetic film structures in the TMR sensor chip are uniformly magnetized into single magnetic domains, but exposure to large magnetic fields can cause the magnetization to break up into non-uniform distributions of magnetic domains, which degrades the performance of the sensor, often causing output offset drift and unwanted hysteresis. For MDT TMR sensors, this effect is small, but in very high precision applications,it is desirable to be able to rapidly initialize the sensor in order to restore an ideal domain configuration and guarantee measurement precision. This application note describes the built in initialization capability of the TMR91xx linear sensor series and the supporting circuitry necessary for performing a sensor initialization.
