Promoting Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation: MindMotion‘s Development and Ecosystem Layout in Automotive Control Chips
On July 24, 2024, under the guidance of the Shanghai Employment Promotion Center, the Shanghai Student Affairs Center, the Shanghai Zhangjiang Science City Sci-tech Industry Service Center, and the Shanghai Industry-Academia Cooperation Education Association, MindMotion Microelectronics was invited to participate in the 2nd Shanghai New Quality Productivity Integrated Circuit Industry Education Integration Conference. The conference aimed to promote cooperation in the integrated circuit field, deepen the integration of the industrial chain, education chain, research chain, talent chain, and innovation chain, and explore the development of school-enterprise cooperation, industry-education integration, and talent cultivation.


At the conference, Dr. Zhou Rongzheng, CTO of MindMotion Microelectronics, delivered a keynote speech titled "Development Trends and Ecosystem Layout of Domestic Automotive Control Chips." He began by discussing the types of automotive chips, the automotive MCU market, and the current status of foreign brands, highlighting three high requirements for automotive-grade control chip products: high stability and reliability, high security and efficiency, and multifunctionality and high integration. These requirements pose both challenges and opportunities for current domestic automotive-grade chips. Dr. Zhou emphasized the opportunities presented by the technological transformation of domestic new energy vehicles. In 2022, China's new energy vehicle production reached 7.058 million units, an increase of 96.9% year-on-year, accounting for over 60% of global new energy vehicle production. The same year, the automotive MCU market size reached $8.35 billion, with a CAGR of 10.9% from 2020-2025, far outpacing the overall MCU market growth rate. This rapid market growth represents a significant opportunity for MindMotion.

Dr. Zhou discussed MindMotion's strategic layout in three areas: Automotive General Purpose Control Chips (AGPM), Automotive Motor Control Dedicated Chips (AMC), and Automotive Single-Chip Integrated Control Chips (ASOC). He particularly highlighted the automotive motor control dedicated chips, noting that MindMotion launched its first motor control dedicated chip as early as 2018, and it is now in its third generation, serving numerous international and domestic brand customers. As the demand for electrification and intelligence in vehicles grows, the need for dedicated chips in motor control applications has surged, aligning well with MindMotion's strengths.
In 2022, MindMotion's new Automotive Chip Testing and Verification Laboratory was officially launched, covering 90% of automotive-grade test items and staffed by nearly 30 dedicated engineers. By the end of 2023, the lab successfully passed CNAS certification. In 2023, MindMotion received ISO 26262 ASIL-D certification from TÜV Rheinland, and over 10 chips have passed AEC-Q100 testing, with some already in mass production. These include applications in reversing radars, pedestrian warning systems, sensors, charging pile current protection devices, intelligent cockpit coprocessors, ETC OBUs, and water pumps.

In terms of industry-academia-research collaboration, Dr. Zhou also showcased MindMotion's active involvement in research projects and achievements led by the Shanghai Municipal Government and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. MindMotion has been recognized as a "Little Giant" SME in Specialized New Sectors by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and as a "Shanghai Science and Technology Little Giant." Additionally, MindMotion actively collaborates with universities, deeply participating in national college student competitions such as the Intelligent Car Competition, the IoT Design Competition, and the Embedded Chip and System Design Competition, establishing a comprehensive student program ecosystem.
Looking ahead, MindMotion will continue to focus on its areas of expertise, rooting itself locally while keeping a global perspective, and contributing to the development of national technology and talent cultivation.
