Virtual Antenna® Enables Reliable Cellular Connectivity for Withings’ New Product Line
THE COMPANY
Withings was founded in 2008 and specializes in creating connected devices that integrate health improvement into daily life. Their award-winning, clinically validated lineup, used by millions of people worldwide, includes connected scales, hybrid watches, sleep sensors, and more. All these devices connect to the Withings app, which helps users get in-depth information about their health and tailored programs to improve it.

THE CHALLENGE
Withings wanted to create a new product line based on the needs of a patient population that needed ongoing monitoring, but who were not very tech-savvy and didn’t always have access to a smart phone to utilize the Withings app. The decision to use cellular was taken and the challenge then became to have a device that could reliably connect in a small form factor to fit the sleek product ID that is the hallmark of the Withings brand.
THE SOLUTION
Withings and Ignion collaborated on the design using Ignion’s RUN mXTEND™ antenna booster to provide cellular connectivity in a small form factor. The process was directed through Ignion’s Antenna Intelligence Cloud™ which guided the positioning of the antenna on the board. The first design review done without the need for a physical prototype indicated a need for a slightly larger PCB to get the performance required. The impact of the proximity of the antenna to the body was another big concern and this was taken into account in the design process and changes were made to maximize efficiency. The final product was brought to market in less than one year and met all the high standards of the Withings Pro range of products.
