Offset Skive Joints
In joints with multiple layers of gaskets, offset the skive
locations of each gasket, i.e., at 12 o’clock and at 6 o’clock.
Retorque After the First Thermal Cycle
In joints with multiple GORE
®
Series 1000 gaskets, it is
REQUIRED to perform a retorque after the first thermal cycle
and cooling to ambient temperature before putting the
equipment into service.
Why? The majority of creep occurs in the first thermal cycle
and can be corrected for with a subsequent retorque.
ATTENTION
To ensure that maximum preload is applied to multiple gasket
joints, follow these recommended best practices:
1. Use bolt lubrication and a cross bolt tightening pattern with
3 torque increments (30%, 60% and 100%) .
2. Do circular tightening passes at 100% of the equipment
manufacturer’s recommended torque until no further nut
turn is achieved.
3. Do a retorque after a thermal cycle and cooling to ambient
temperature.
For additional help, please contact Gore Gaskets Technical
Services.
Glass lined steel (GLS) equipment may be designed with joints
in which multiple gaskets (2 or more) are compressed with a
single set of bolts or clamps. Since bolt load loss due to creep
from thermal cycles is a function of the total gasket thickness,
care must be taken in assembling these joints to assure a long
lasting seal in use.
This document supplements the instructions in the GORE
®
Gasket
Tape Series 1000 Installation Guide. The following practices
MUST be followed when assembling a joint with multiple gaskets.
Measure Flange Irregularities for Each Gasket
In joints with multiple gaskets, a separate set of deviation
measurements must be taken for EACH gasket relative to its
adjacent equipment surface.
Why? Each gasket only compensates for deviation between the
surfaces against which it is installed.
Minimize Gasket Material With Shimming
When choosing between using 3 mm shim(s) on a 6 mm base
layer versus a full 9 mm base layer, for joints with multiple
gaskets select shimming whenever reasonable.
Why? Minimizing the total gasket material within the multiple
gasket joint will minimize bolt load loss from creep.
